An interview with Hugh Howey? That...Hi Patrice,

An interview with Hugh Howey? That's a coup--congrats! Now I definitely need to check out your Silo stories.

From day one WOOL had that magic quality that makes you tell other people about it once you read it--a combination of killer conceptual hook, fantastic writing, and a story so rich that you keep thinking about long afterward.

That word-of-mouth virality is pure magic... I've noticed that the books which rise to the top and stay there are the same books I hear about beforehand from my friends and neighbors who aren't much given to talking about books, otherwise.

Hugh,

Like Joe, you are a true trailblazer and inspiration for all of us. Now I can't wait to dig into DUST.
Paul Drakerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12598834654927530856noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11291165.post-70498827044510635312013-08-16T13:12:31.366-05:002013-08-16T13:12:31.366-05:00Also, I'm always amused when self-published au...Also, I'm always amused when self-published authors reach a level of success that gets the attention of a trad publishing house, then signs their life away for the usual shitty rates just to be "traditionally" published. I want to grab them and shout at them, "HELLOOOOOOOOO. Wasn't there a reason you self-pubbed in the first place? Because trad publishing terms SUCK?" Glad to see Hugh sticking to his guns. If I ever reach any level of success, I'd like to think I'd tell trad pub to go piss themselves if they want to sign me to some the usual shitty deal. Especially if I've been successful enough that trad pub houses are looking to sign me in the first place. If you're already that successful ON YOUR OWN, why in the world would you give it all up? So a bunch of stuffy NY critics can review you in a magazine bought almost entirely by people who work in the industry? Boggles the mind. But I guess the power of being able to say you were published by this or that publishing house is still too strong for some. As someone who built his online business from scratch, with no help from anyone, I could care less if someone from NY reviews one of my books. In fact, if I found out they might want to review it, I might pay them NOT to review it. Really, that's how little I think about these people.McVickersnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11291165.post-30465401524778734672013-08-16T13:03:37.630-05:002013-08-16T13:03:37.630-05:00It's funny, I'm reasonably new to Joe'...It's funny, I'm reasonably new to Joe's blog -- got in around a few months ago -- but I've started reading some of his older posts, and you saw a lot of pretentious "you'll never be a real author until someone pays to publish your work" comments from a bunch of anonymous guys. With a limited deal with Simon & Schuster.

Yes, there was John Locke. But what I like very much about Hugh is that he is very vocal on the internet. And precise about his deal. Like a militant in the right sense of the term.

That's a great thing about self-publishing, freedom of speech, and Hugh have embraced it. Of course, there are still limits I guess, but this style of freedom is still a great improvement.Alan Spadehttp://emmanuelguillot.over-blog.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11291165.post-26412971946650449332013-08-16T11:05:07.666-05:002013-08-16T11:05:07.666-05:00Like Jude, I've corresponded with Hugh a few t...Like Jude, I've corresponded with Hugh a few times on his web site.
